“RAVENA!” a voice called.

Turning, I found Marco standing some distance away, waving me toward him. “She’s asking for the boy.”

“We have to go,” I told the man and his daughter. I grabbed Richie’s hand and together we ran toward Marco.

“I have to talk to you,” I said the moment I was within earshot of my mustached friend.

“Karen’s asking for him,” he said.

“Yeah,” I muttered. “I got that. But it’s going to have to wait.”

“I’m not waiting,” Richie yelled, pulling free of my grip and running in the direction of the ER entrance.

Marco tried to hurry after him, but I grabbed his arm.

“Stop,” I begged.

He frowned at me.

“I think Richie just healed that little girl.” I pointed to the child who was climbing up the slide ladder with no difficulty. “Is that even possible? Could he possess the power to heal sick people?”

Marco nodded slowly. “It might be possible. Maybe that’s why the Cullers were after him at Raven’s Nest?”

“So then how do we get him to heal his mother?”

He shrugged. “How did he heal the girl?”

“He was holding her hand and his glowing green light enveloped her.” Even as the words came out of my mouth, I knew they sounded ridiculous, but I knew what I’d seen.

Marco frowned thoughtfully and began to slowly walk in the direction Richie had disappeared. “It doesn’t make sense that he wouldn’t heal her if he could.”

I followed after him. “Maybe his magic only works on strangers?”

Marco rolled his eyes. “That’s not how it works.”

“Well, explain how it works, because that little girl, a complete stranger, complains about being dizzy, and boom, she’s healthy again. So why is it so—”

“She told him she was dizzy?” Marco interrupted.

I nodded.

“Maybe Karen hasn’t told him what she’s feeling. She hasn’t told me. Has she told you?”

I shook my head.

“I think we need to go find out,” Marco said, increasing his pace.

I fell into step beside him. “You don’t think my idea is crazy?”

“Oh, I do,” he said with a wink and a smile. “All the best ideas always are.”

We made our way to the Emergency Room and back to the small room where Karen lay on a bed. She was weak, fading. Richie was sobbing softly, his face buried in the mattress beside her. Cheeks damp, she stroked his head, trying to comfort the inconsolable child.

Tears burned my own eyes, but I swallowed hard and rubbed them away.

Karen’s focus locked on me. “You’ll take him?” she begged.

“I—” I couldn’t force any more sound out as, overcome with emotion, my throat squeezed tight.

Behind me, Marco gently closed the door to the room and closed the blinds. “We have an idea. Well, Ravena has an idea.”

I tore my gaze from Karen and moved to Richie’s side. Putting my hand on his shoulder, I gave him a gentle shake to get his attention. “Richie. Richie, I need you to listen to me.”

He lifted his head. His heartbroken expression made my chest hurt. I crouched down so that I was eye level with him.
